Job Description

Title: PhD scholarship in Digital Moulding 4.0 - Advanced Process Analytics for Zero-Defect Injection Moulding Technology

Company Name: Danmarks Tekniske Universitet

If you are establishing your career as researcher in the field of Digital Technologies, Production Engineering, Industry 4.0, and you are looking for the best possible foundation to fulfil your dreams and ambitions, the opportunity is right here in front of you. At DTU Mechanical Engineering you will break new ground at the absolute forefront of what is possible in the field of high precision polymer processing and injection moulding.

The Section for Manufacturing Engineering at the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Technical University of Denmark has an open position in the field of 'Digital Moulding 4.0 - Advanced Process Analytics for Zero-Defect Injection Moulding Technology'.

The PhD project is carried out in the framework of the Horizon2020 Marie-Curie Innovative Training Network DIGIMAN4.0 'DIGItal MANufacturing Technologies for Zero-defect Industry 4.0 Production'. Please look at the project website www.digiman4-0.mek.dtu.dk/ before reading further. The PhD project is related to the Early-Stage Researcher (ESR) position no. 4 of the DIGIMAN4.0 project.

Responsibilities and qualifications
Your overall focus will be to strengthen the Department's competences within injection moulding, in-process monitoring and computational modelling. You will work with nearby colleagues, and with both academic and industrial partners in Denmark as well in Europe.

The position focuses on research in the area of precision manufacturing engineering and digital manufacturing technologies, with focus on polymer processing by injection moulding, their enabling process chains, and the related product development technologies.

It is the goal for the current PhD project to develop the digital manufacturing technology platform for the development and production of high accuracy moulded components.

The PhD project will have the following objectives:

  • Implementation of injection moulding process monitoring and analytics for high accuracy process optimization to reach near-zero-defect efficiency.
  • Establishment of the moulding digital twin by using multi-physics modelling for the integrated product/process/tool simulation.
  • Prediction of product quality characteristics based on process data analytics from physical experiments and validated simulations.

Qualifications include:
  • Experience in the field of polymer processing (e.g., injection moulding).
  • Knowledge of statistical quality control methods (e.g., statistical process control, design of experiment, big data analytics).
  • Knowledge and experience with digital manufacturing technologies (e.g., additive manufacturing technologies, simulation, machine learning).
  • Knowledge and experience with measuring technologies and quality control methods.
  • Ability to work independently, to plan and carry out complex tasks, and to be a part of a large, dynamic group.
  • A two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree.

Special requirements: Mobility and experience
At the time of recruitment, the Early-Stage Researcher (ESR) must not have resided or carried out his/her main activity (work, studies, etc.) in Denmark for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to his/her recruitment under the project (March 2022). Eligible candidates must be, at the time of the recruitment, in the first four years of their research career and have not been awarded a doctoral degree.

Approval and Enrolment
The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU. For information about our enrolment requirements and the general planning of the PhD study programme, please see the DTU PhD Guide. http://www.dtu.dk/english/Education/PhD/Rules/PhDguide

Assessment
The assessment of the applicants will be made by Associate Professor Guido Tosello and Senior Researcher Matteo Calaon from the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Technical University of Denmark.
